| Indiana was admitted as a state, 1816. Creation of Porter County, March 1835. Jackson Township was incorporated as a township April 12, 1836. It is one of 12 townships in Porter County. There are 1008 townships in Indiana. There are 92 counties in Indiana. Jackson Township has 27 sections of land, each being one square mile, all in Township 36 North, Range 5 West, of the Second Principal Meridian. Jackson Township is bounded: on the North by 1100 North and 1200 North (Westchester and Pine Townships); on the East by the Porter-LaPorte County Line Road (700 East, New Durham Township); on the South by 600 North (Washington Township); and on the West by 200 East (Liberty and Westchester Townships). Jackson Township has a small area incorporated into the Town of Chesterton. Jackson Township has three mailing addresses: Chesterton (46304), Valparaiso (46383) and Westville (46391). Jackson Township is a part of Duneland School Corporation. The township has an elementary school location containing grades K through 5. Middle School students (6-8) attend Liberty Middle School. High School students attend Chesterton High School (new facilities scheduled for fall 2000 opening). There is also a plan to change middle school structure concerning 5th - 6th grades, and 7th - 8th grades, for 2001-2002. Jackson Township contracts with two Fire Departments. Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department for protection west of 500 East and Westville Volunteer Fire Department for protection east of 500 East. Jackson Township’s population estimate from the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission for July 1998 is 4011. Jackson Township is a farming and rural community (watch for tractors and combines!) Water, sewerage, gas, electric: Individually drilled wells and individual septic systems are utilized in this area, except in Chesterton town limits. Natural gas is available through NIPSCO (NiSource) throughout most of the area. Propane gas, for the other areas, is available through private suppliers. Electricity is supplied from two sources, NIPSCO and Kankakee Valley REMC. Jackson Township zoning is mostly Rural Residential. There are very small areas of Commercial zoning. Jackson Township’s primary housing units are Single Family. There are no apartment units, and one Manufactured Housing park, containing four units. Major roadways: US Hwy 6 runs through our township; State Road 2 crosses the southeast corner of our township; the Indiana Toll Road (80/90) runs through our township and is accessible one half mile to our west, and two miles to our east; Hwy 49 By-pass runs just outside our western border; Interstate 94 is to our north; US Hwy 421 is to our east; US Hwy 30 is four plus miles south of our southern boundary.
