Did you know that you need a permit for:

  • An above ground swimming pool?
  • A shed whether movable or not?
  • New shingles on your house?
The Porter County Plan Commission can answer all your questions regarding the need and use of permits, land splits, subdivisions and zoning.

In the past, Indiana and Porter County had not required building permits or assessments for buildings that were not on a permanent foundation. That is no longer the case. All "improvements" must be approved by the Plan Commission and will be taxed by the township assessor.

All structures and remodeling (i.e. changing window and door sizes, locations, conversions, etc.) need permits. "Cosmetic" changes, such as siding and gutters, do not need a permit, at this point. It is always in your best interest to contact the Plan Commission for any questions or updates on changes.

Remember to display your permit card at your location. After final inspection only can it be removed.

There are also restrictions on land divisions and requirements on building sites. Information on the Technical Advisory Committee is available on the Plan Commission website.
