The Township executive has various duties and responsibilities. These include "fence viewer," administrator of poor relief, act as township assessor (in townships with a population of less than 8000), collect dog tax monies, maintain all township records and properties, provide annual reports, budgetary, tax levy presentations and fire protection, and other official duties.
The Township Board has legislative duties and performs specific, official functions. The Board has miscellaneous budgetary and advisory functions. The consideration and approval of the annual reports, budgets, levies and estimates, are in part, the administrative actions of the Board. They act as counsel to the Trustee.
Residents of the township needing clarification or action on any of the above duties can contact the Trustee.
Individuals owning, harboring or keeping a dog(s) are required to pay Indiana Dog Tax. This is not the same as the tags you would obtain from your veterinarian. The monies collected are used to pay claims for farm animal killing or maiming, or rabid dog bites by unknown dogs. All claims must be reported to the sheriff’s department or the Trustee upon finding. Excess monies collected in each township are given to the county fund for claims. Excess county monies are given to the state fund and a portion of state excess monies are given for university veterinary research. If you are in need of tags, please contact the office.
Residents who need poor relief assistance from the township for emergency needs should contact the Trustee. Qualifications are based on income guidelines, need and residency of the township. Applications are available by calling the office.
Residents of other townships are required to contact their respective Trustees. (Click on Porter County Link on the Home page; Administration; Trustees or Assessors.)
