I am proud to have been serving Jackson Township since 1979. This is my sixth, four year term in office. I attended Jackson Township School, and graduated from the consolidated Chesterton High School in 1973. Keith, my husband, and I, have two children and two grandchildren.

When approached to be a candidate in 1978, the position was mostly township business. The obligations of the Township Trustee, along with assessing duties have continued to grow. My commitment to, and acquired knowledge of, this township has made this a labor of love. The contact with the people associated to this township and it’s residents, are what makes this position so gratifying. It is truly a pleasure to serve in this capacity.

My Assessing and Trustee Experience

I’ve attended numerous trustee and assessing, schools and conferences since my beginnings at the Center Township Assessor’s office.

I passed the Level I and Level II Indiana Assessor/Appraiser Certification, as required by the Indiana State Board of Tax Commissioners, by March 1998.

I have been employed in a part time position with a local surveyor for ten years. My experience there was a vast array of valuable knowledge relating to land ownership and planning.

My memberships in the Indiana Township Trustees Association, Inc., the Indiana Township Assessors Association and the International Association of Assessing Officials has provided sources of continuing education as required by the State of Indiana.

What is the Township Board?

The Township Board is comprised of three elected citizens of the township. They serve four year terms and provide budgetary authority for the township. The current board members of Jackson Township are a very concerned representation of the township. We all have the duty to protect and provide for our community. Our working relationship is a true example of team spirit. We appreciate and welcome comments and concerns from our constituents.

What Is Ahead?

It is anticipated that the new Real Estate Manual for the 2001 reassessment will be released in the near future. The reassessment officially commenced July 1, 1999, using market value information for land valuation. The State of Indiana has submitted the use of the Marshall and Swift valuation manuals, with guidelines provided by the State Board of Tax Commissioners. It will be presented for final approval in November. I am looking forward to the new process of the True Tax Value system.

Although our two township cemeteries are maintained, they are in dire need of stone repair. We hope to obtain an estimation of cost for restoration. A clean up day is also desired. If you know of, or belong to an organization that may be interested in helping, please call.

The Township Board has also approved the installation of a siren in the township for emergency weather warnings. We are anticipating necessary paperwork required for state authorization.

When You Call

Most times my office is staffed by three people - me, myself and I. I do have part-time help, but generally they are in the field with me. If you get my answering machine, please leave a message. I am frequently doing field work (measuring), at the Porter County Administration Center or with a client.

My hope is that if I can help or direct you in any way, you would feel free to call on me. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you.

Sincerely,

Janice M. Meyers
